Business Name Numerology: How to Calculate It and How Much to Trust It
A name number can be a satisfying tie-breaker. It should never be the first filter.
How to calculate a business name number
Using the Pythagorean chart, convert each letter to a digit (A, J, S = 1; B, K, T = 2; C, L, U = 3; D, M, V = 4; E, N, W = 5; F, O, X = 6; G, P, Y = 7; H, Q, Z = 8; I, R = 9), add them, and reduce the total to a single digit, keeping 11, 22 and 33. Use the name customers see and say, usually without legal suffixes. Our business name calculator does this instantly and shows the working.
What the numbers are associated with
- 1 — founders, first movers, bold brands
- 2 — partnerships, agencies, service
- 3 — media, creative and marketing businesses
- 4 — finance, construction, logistics: reliability
- 5 — travel, sales, e-commerce: speed and change
- 6 — health, home, hospitality: care
- 7 — research, technology, analytics: expertise
- 8 — finance, real estate, scale: authority
- 9 — non-profits, education, global brands: purpose
- 11, 22, 33 — visionary platforms, large builds, mission-driven organisations
The checks that matter more
- Trademark clearance in your class and markets.
- Domain availability — ideally the exact-match .com.
- Radio test — can someone spell it after hearing it once?
- Cultural check — meanings and sounds in your target languages.
- Social handles — consistent across platforms.
Only then compare name numbers between the finalists. If two names pass every practical check, letting numerology break the tie costs nothing — and gives the brand a story.
