What is a token?
A token is a chunk of text that a language model reads or writes — often a short word or part of a word. In English, a rough rule of thumb is about four characters, or three-quarters of a word, per token.
Why are output tokens priced differently?
Most providers charge more per output token than per input token, because generating text is more compute-intensive than reading it.
